I woke up one autumn morning and stared out the window of my kitchen. The first early snow had fallen. I stepped out onto the porch to smell the cold morning air, see the dead leaves on the ground buried by the new frost.
I looked out at the forest and saw a tree move. Not the trees swaying with the wind, but a single birch vibrating. The white bark of the other trees blended with the falling snow, but this single birch moving, an intense and uncanny purple.
I moved with terror and purpose to grab my rifle from the truck, hoping this image would cease by the time I returned. But it was still there. Tearing into my eye like a cataract. Seeing nothing else I fired at the birch.
This turned out to be the most important day of my life...

I found three quarters in a vending machine tray
Guess I'll buy something to eat today
Found a mattress in an alley by some bins
Guess I'll rest here, not the worst that I've slept in
But if I had a house
Or if I had a home
If I had a job
Or if I had the means
I found two quarters left in a payphone
Guess I’ll call someone
Found a blanket left outside in the rain
Guess I’ll use this but not much else has changed
But if I had a house
Or if I had a home
If I even had a dog
Or if I had someone
If I had the means, I’d have a degree
If I had a degree, I’d have a job
If I had a job, I’d have the cash
If I had the cash, I’d have the means
But I’m Empty

Nothing to eat, but it’s gonna be fine
Nowhere to sleep, but it’s gonna be fine
No more shoes stolen, so it’s gonna be fine
Don’t know where I’m going, but it’s gonna be fine
It’s such a beautiful day
It’s such a beautiful day, but I don’t want to have to be trapped outside
Some more shoes stolen, but it’s gonna be fine
It’s such a beautiful day
It’s such a beautiful day, but I don’t want to have to be trapped outside
Don’t know where I’m going, but it’s gonna be fine
It’s such a beautiful day
It’s such a beautiful day, but I don’t want to have to be trapped outside

Sorry mama, don’t mean to make you cry
But you better wipe your eyes, I’m preparing die
I don’t want to die
I don’t think I can forgive you anymore
I don’t think I can
Sorry mama, don’t mean to make you cry
But you better wipe your eyes, I’m preparing die
I don’t think I can forgive you anymore
I don’t think I can forget you anymore
I don’t think I can erase you anymore
I don’t think I can
Can you see me?
Can you hear me?
Please just help me
